After surviving the launch of space shuttle Enterprise in a hail of Tommy gun bullets, ex-astronaut Mick Oolfson never dreamed that Tobias Ishwald, the relentless head of NASA Security—and the man who got him canned—would ride a shuttle into space to hunt him down.
Geek goddess Heloise Chin reveals that the Channel Zilch reality show was a sham to get her Pop to pay for the mission. Her real motivation is to broadcast a Declaration of War on Death to rally the world’s geeks to work on open source Singularity projects. To hijack geek brains, Hel uses all her weapons her smarts, her beauty, her guts, and her vision.
A near-future, hard-science thriller with heart and purpose, HEL’S BET is a smart, funny, fast-moving adventure you won’t soon forget and the second volume in the Hel’s Bet Series. Ride along on a mad, shoe-string shuttle mission to kickstart the Singularity!
Praise for the Hel’s Bet Series
"Definitely good fun — and very carefully thought out on the technology side, despite being in the general vein of comedic action-adventure ...
The first book in the series, Channel Zilch, felt like a breezy, humorous near-future geek action/SF romp ... I went through it quickly and lightly, and kept wanting to see what happened next..
Then Hel's Bet felt a lot deeper to me -- with some of the character portraits and interactions exploring the line between "charmingly quirky" and "profoundly emotionally troubled and bizarrely insane" ... raising questions about what the hell is sanity and what the hell is the self anyway ... Suddenly the philosophical implications of chronic pain and dissociative identity (dis?)order in the context of posthumanism start popping up here and there -- and getting nonlinearly correlated with confusing issues regarding romance, sexuality and immortality -- amidst all the goofy jokes and well-calculated near-space mayhem..."

PRAISE FOR CHANNEL ZILCH, Volume I of the Hel’s Bet Series
“A madcap romp. Filled to the brim with hilarious set pieces, this is a wickedly entertaining read.”
—Aliette de Bodard, 2012 & 2013 Nebula Award winner, 2012 Locus Award winner, 2010 & 2015 British Science Fiction Assoc. Award Winner
“It’s a geek’s dream combination mix Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, a Space Shuttle caper, and a beautiful-brilliant computer wiz femme fatale who just happens to be cooking up some smart AI. I laughed out loud during many sections, and was glued to the book throughout.”
—William Hertling, author of The Singularity Series and Kill Process
“…part John Clancy thriller, part Spider Robinson wordplay, part Robert Heinlein wonder, part homage to geek culture mixed together with clever originality... Sharp took a lot of gambles and pulled out all the stops to give us a thrilling ride (kinda like flying on a rocket...) On top of that, he gave us a cliffhanger ending to force us to beg for the next book!... It’s impossible to categorize this story because there are so many different elements that one would think would conflict, but they all end up working well and forming a synergy that proves this piece to be jaw-dropping literature. If you like the truly unique and well written, then you will love Channel Zilch.”

Hel Bet Book II of the Hel Bet series Hels' Bet 2 eBook Doug Sharp
Well I just finished reading Hel's Bet, the second in the series and what a pleasure it was. Now, I must admit that I am very interested in the subject matter of Hel's Bet but that is not enough to garner my praise (There have been many books that I wanted desperately to like because of the subject matter, that left me bored). Doug Sharp writes in such a fun style, I was laughing out loud and really just glued to the book until finished. I am sure it helps that I am in perfect agreement with Hel and would gladly enlist with her. But Doug Sharp takes these idea's that we seem to agree upon and puts together the most fun series I have known in so long I can't recall. If you like comic action scifi you will love Hel's Bet and Channel Zilch.Product details

Hel Bet Book II of the Hel Bet series Hels' Bet 2 eBook Doug Sharp Reviews
The second installment of the Hel's bet series delivers on the promise of the first with all the laughs, niggling technical details and complete insanity that a reader could want. Snow Crash meets Stanger in a Strange Land with a touch of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas thrown in for good measure.
If you like books like the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, you'll enjoy Hel's Bet. Imagine the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but set in the current day, in Earth (or rather, Earth orbit), mixed with real world technology and the singularity.
I really enjoyed Channel Zilch, so I was waiting rather impatiently for the sequel to come out. Hel's Bet continues the zany fun of Channel Zilch, although there are some serious moments as well. While the first book was a globe spanning criminal caper about stealing a space shuttle, the second book is more of a light-hearted philosophical romp about people, their relationships, and the technological singularity, all set within the confines of a orbiting spaceship. Although the book's namesake, Hel, is an improbable real-world-person, she's the perfect foil for the protagonist, Mick, and the rest of the crew to explore the many ideas in Hel's Bet.
I also love that the author managed to tell a fun tale while sticking with real current and near-future technology and actual science including accurate orbital mechanics.
Recommended!
Takes a lot for me to rank a book something other than 4 stars, but Doug really hit it out of the park with Hel's bet. The story continues from Channel Zilch, the great space ship heist caper, while its intrepid and zany crew attempt to trigger the singularity in this installment. It's darker than the first, more firmly set in hard sci-fi, and much more reflective. You can tell the author put a lot of his concerns/soul into this and it's well worth the read. I received an advance review copy of this book.
A zany romp of a hard SF story, this is a sequel to Channel Zilch. In that story, Mick Oolfsen, Heloise Chin, and their friends steal the space shuttle Enterprise and successfully launch into space. Now they're heading into geosynchronous orbit, while Mick's nemesis Toby Ishwald tries to destroy them, and their video star Richard Head goes nuts in the close quarters of a spacecraft.
The cast of characters is fun and engaging, the engineering and physics is convincing, and the zany romp so wild it's a great read. And yes, there's a purple cow in the book.
I greatly enjoyed this book and its prequel. I love Hel. I would happily be one of her minions. Hel is a geek goddess in all to human form. But she is working on fixing that. The book is wild near future space opera wrapped around a call for dedication to Singularity - to achieving a level of intelligence and technology that ends so much of the suffering that is still our lot.
While some of the in space actions and close calls seem a bit unlikely a chain of successful dealing with crises and seat of the pants astronautical skill and sheer "dumb luck" it is quite enjoyable to read a story of non-super humans doing things we seem to have forgot about doing, such as humans doing much of anything beyond LEO in space.
But most of all I love the dedication to a positive and wild future, the beacon call of radical hope and the reminder of what is possible. I am no stranger to Singularity lore. The book gets much of it right. It is so easy to forget what is possible and just "get caught up" in the mundane. I am very grateful for the reminder. I am grateful to have some of the jambs knocked out in an amusing and entertaining fashion.
